29 Sept 93, En route to Brindisi, Italy, where we caught a ferry to Greece
About 7 days into the trip we reach Istanbul. While most of the group went into the city, a couple of us stayed behind for a rest, and helped Rowdy (Steve Morrish NZ, in blue boiler suit) give Tadpoles a service.
The trip so far:
Day 1: Travel to Germany. We met in Earls Court, driven in minibus to Dover to meet Tadpoles. She was never licensed to carry passengers in the UK, as it wasn't worth it for the short trip to Dover. Ferry to Ostend -we didn't travel in France, with so many Kiwi passengers, they still had trouble getting visas to France (following the Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior trouble). Travelled overnight to get to Munich. We ran out of diesel short of the German border. Had to scrounge some from a lorry driver to get us to a filling station. I remember asking to see the fuel gauge - Rowdy showed me the wooden stick. This was the same stick he used as a choke every morning to warm her up, jammed between the throttle pedal and the steering wheel.
Day 2: Munich & Beerfest. Sorry, I have very little recollection of this day! There were dozens of deckers and top deck coaches there. Sadly I have no pics of them.
Day 3: Munich to Venice. Lovely drive over the alps into Italy
Day 4: Venice. Sightseeing, camped outside and took a ferry into the city.
Day 5: Venice to Brindisi.
Day 6: Brindisi, overnight ferry to Greece
Day 7: Meteora, Greece. Sightseeing - monasteries on rocks!
Day 8: Meteora to Kavala. Camp on beach and had bbq party. Made Sangria in a dustbin. Drank it!
Day 9: Kavala to Istanbul
Day 10: Istanbul
Day 11: Istanbul
Day 12: Istanbul to Gallipoli
I carried two cameras with me. A Canon A1 SLR and a tiny Olympus point & shoot which could go in my pocket.
More soon,
